The human threshold of pain is approximately 1 W/m². The human hearing threshold has an intensity of approximately 1♱0⁻¹² W/m². The SI unit for sound intensity is the watt per square meter (W/m²). In other words, the sound intensity is the rate at which sound energy passes through that unit area or power per unit area and it is measured in units of power per unit of area. ![]() The sound intensity I is the amount of sound energy per unit time transferred in the direction of sound waves propagation through a unit area that is perpendicular to the direction of sound waves travel. ![]()
